Zona Design's Image Makers Create A&E Network's Boomer Nation Open and Jacket Art for the Free Press Book that Inspired the Series
July 9, 2004 -- For A&E Network, ZONA Design, Inc., a New York-based motion design and branding studio, created the main title animation for Boomer Nation, a lively and nostalgic two-hour special which premiered Sunday, June 13th, 9-11pm EST/PT and celebrated the 50 million+ babies born between the years 1946 and 1964 who entered the world with a sense of optimism, rebellion and a compulsive drive for change.
ZONA Design utilized 60s, 70s and 80s pop iconography and typography, cut in a quick paced, energetic style, to create a fetching :15 program open which shares a color palette and sense of design with the Boomer Nation (The Free Press) book jacket, also designed by ZONA.
"The vibrant program animation opens with a kaleidoscopic tie-dyed background and a peace sign, and quickly moves through a number of iconic images including smiley faces, a disco ball, lava lamps, the gull-winged Delorean, high topped sneakers, a new wave guy sporting a skinny tie, and a gal with attitude to spare," explained ZONA Director/Creative Director Zoa Martinez. "The A&E team are great brandmakers. Working with them is always a wonderfully collaborative process, with each party inspiring and pushing the other," she said.
ZONA Design Vice President and Executive Producer Dennis Fluet, stated, "The ZONA team of designers and creatives are developing work for everything from print to HD release in theaters. As image makers clients look to us to create cohesive visual messages, identities that translate to any message platform. The synergy that we were able to exercise for A&E Network and The Free Press on Boomer Nation is a perfect example."
"We were pleased to partner again with ZONA on this entertaining A&E special," said Artie Scheff, Senior Vice President, Marketing, A&E Network. "Boomer Nation was a compelling and fun show, and ZONA, as per usual, did a great job creating animation that not only captured the spirit of the era but the energy and excitement of the program."
Inspired by the recently launched book Boomer Nation by Steven Gillon, the A&E special included interviews with Jay and Mavis Leno, singer Lisa Loeb, Kathy Ireland, Macy Gray, Arsenio Hall, Patricia Field (costume designer, Sex and the City,) Hugh Hefner, Cindy Crawford, Marilou Henner, Nick Carter (Backstreet Boy), Marshall Herskovitz and Ed Zwick (creators, Thirtysomething), and Gillon weighing in on just about everything. After all, this was the generation that lived through Vietnam, mini-skirts, Nixon, bra burning, Woodstock, leisure suits and The Monkees. They pissed off their parents, shrugged off the establishment and kicked off a revolution that changed the world. From Watergate to waterbeds, from beanbag chairs to Beanie Babies, from Ozzie and Harriet to Ozzie and Sharon they've "come a long way, baby."
The ZONA creative team, known for their distinctive and effective designs, included Director/Creative Director Zoa Martinez, Executive Producer Dennis Fluet; Senior Designer Mark Lee, Composite Artist Keith Yin Yan, and HD Director of Photography Kevin Burke. ZONA Design utilized ADOBE After Effects, Illustrator and Photoshop in the execution of this project.
A&E Network was represented by Senior Vice President, Marketing Artie Scheff; Director of On-Air Promotion Valerie Albanese; and Producer Molly Thompson.
The open is underscored by the John Lee Hooker hit "Boom, Boom."
