The Children Of Luiz

Brugge, Belgium August 17, 2004 -- Mark Van Overmeire, a composer, classical guitar player and percussion performer from Belgium, has spent 6 weeks in the street child care center CEAMAC. The owner Luiz Santana, once a street child himself, runs the center without support. “This has been the most rewarding experience of my life," Mark comments. “The love that I received from the children was so overwhelming. It breaks my heart to see them wander to an uncertain future."

Mark composed ‘Os Meninos Inocentes’ (The Innocent Children) after his stay with the Children of Luiz. The song has been published on his recently released CD ‘Impresiones’, a musical translation of his 4 year stay in South America and an album that travels from jazz to world, from folk to classical. "Well, this is just magical," independent reviewer Dave Starns writes about ‘Impresiones’. "The best use of effects for atmosphere I've heard in awhile. This is sort of jazz in the same way some of Eberhard Weber's orchestral ECM music is jazz.

"Salvador da Bahía is known as the Capital of Africa in Brazil”, Mark says. “Drum Bands parade in the city, there are parties till sunrise but ‘Os Meninos Inocentes’ portrays another side of a striking city”. "It seems like a simple song but it flirts with difficult rhythm changes and modulations thus creating a feeling of fragility".
